In this gritty play, actor Craig Barclay explores some of the challenges that can come with addiction to social media. His performance is strong and carefully considered, switching between the character of John and a range of others, including John’s girlfriend who is struggling with her partner’s obsession with his phone. It is an unsettling and realistic performance from Barclay, not unlike an episode of ‘Black Mirror’.
The plot itself is perhaps less secure. There is almost a suggestion that off the back of one viral tweet, John develops some form of split personality disorder. It is perhaps also radical to suggest that one viral tweet can create the level of obsession and addition that John suffers.
Despite these flaws, it is a good performance and a thought-provoking one, in a world in which so many of us are chronically online.
