EdFringe 2024 Review: Nic Sampson ‘Yellow Power Ranger’ (Assembly Roxy; 17:45)

What an absolute and unmitigated joy this show is. I laughed until I cried. Sampson was the Yellow Power Ranger in the franchise’s 14th series, and it is the experience of this on which he draws for his new show. It is beautifully framed: you are cordially invited to a ComiCon-style convention for a much anticipated reunion of Sampson and his colleagues – but when they are late to arrive, he is left to entertain the audience on his own.

What unfolds is hysterically funny: we learn about Sampson’s daily routine, his new novel, his tense relationship with his agent and how to film the perfect self-tape. All this is interspersed beautifully with lightning-quick, whip-smart multimedia jokes, and my favourite visual gag in years (I am still laughing about it, even now).

As Sampson always does so beautifully (see: ‘Marathon: 1904’), the pay off at the end of this show is a thing of beauty, and full of heart, and the various threads of his hilarious narrative are brought together impressively.

One does not need to be a fan of Power Rangers to enjoy this comment on the nature of celebrity and self-criticism, but for fans of the show there is even more to enjoy here.

Please see this show. It is my easiest ‘5 star’ review, and absolutely my pick of the Fringe.
