EdFringe 2024 Review: ‘Via Dolorosa’ by David Hare (thespace @ Surgeon’s Hall, 09:45)

The complexities and tensions of the relationship between Israel and Palestine are perhaps at their highest since David Hare wrote and performed ‘Via Dolorosa’ in 1997. It feels pertinent, then, that Chasing Rainbows have brought this piece of drama to the Edinburgh Fringe this year, performed beautifully and believably by Gary Hay.

Hay’s delivery is almost conversational: it is easy to allow yourself to believe that this journey was Hay’s, and these words are his. His performance is lyrical and mellifluous; spellbinding and utterly captivating, and Hare’s words reiterate the complex nature of the conflict, and the differing, and strong, views of the people he met – politicians, public figures and citizens of Israel, Palestine and Gaza alike. Hare describes his work as ‘dramatic journalism’ and it is certainly that: Hay performs the show powerfully and sometimes with incredulity at the impasse at which the people he meets find himself. The performance is supported by cards displayed at the back of the stage, highlighting key points on Hare’s journey, and key figures he meets. This is helpful.

It is a must-see performance, powerfully performed and as relevant today as it ever has been.
