What a wonderful little show. This new musical tells the story of the very real 1991 tribunal which sought to answer the age old question: is a Jaffa Cake a biscuit, or a cake?
The cast of five multi-role, and an added layer of complexity is present as the two barristers in the case work through issues with their parents and thus with themselves. The songs are catchy and well performed, and there are a couple of particularly impressive set pieces of choreography, with stand out performances from Katie Pritchard (the tax man song is a tour-de-force) and Sabrina Messer.
Written by Sam Cochrane, who also stars as barrister Kevin, the show is sung-through with 30 songs packed in to a very tight and very funny hour.
There are echoes in this show of other musicals, none more so than the juggernaut that is ‘Operation Mincemeat’, both in terms of the multi-rolling, witty and talented cast, and also in a couple of the songs, too.
It is absurd and funny in equal measure, well worth a watch, and deserves a life post-Fringe. Now pass me the Jaffa Cakes.
