EdFringe 2024 Review: Hold On To Your Butts (Pleasance Courtyard; 14:00)

The concept of this show is exceptionally strong, and it has been tried and tested in the States. This is its first outing in the UK, and is playing to regularly sold out audiences at the Pleasance Courtyard.

The premise is this: two actors, and one foley artist, perform a shot-by-shot, low-budget remake of the absolute classic, ‘Jurassic Park’. The strength in the show comes from the actors’ impressions – particularly of Jeff Goldblum (Ian Malcolm), Laura Dern (Ellie Sattler), Ariana Richards (Lex) and Bob Peck (Robert Muldoon). The impression of ‘Mr DNA’ was also exceptional. They work incredibly hard all the way through, swapping props and dashing around to keep the show going. There are also some good visual gags – particularly once Lex and Tim make it back to the visitor centre.

However, it was disappointing that a large number of the sound effects were pre-recorded and played via a Macbook, rather than created live. There were moments that were genuinely very funny, but the novelty of the format also wore off rather too quickly and meant that at times the show generated a ‘huh’ of recognition, rather than the laughs it was seeking to create.
